Dr. Woods,

Is there any research on the subject of old bucks losing antler mass as they age? Do you have any suggested reading on this subject?

Thanks in advance! Also thank you for all of the time and effort you put into sharing your passion/profession. It is a great example of true Christian values of giving back!

God Bless,,

Caiden,

Thank you for the kind words and for asking God to bless our work! I truly appreciate your prayers!!

I’m not aware of any published research that indicates bucks will lose antler mass as they mature or reach extreme maturity.  Most bucks increase antler size (including mass) till they are seven years old or older.  Very few bucks live this long in the wild.

Based on my observations, even senile (extremely mature bucks in captivity) bucks may decrease in overall antler size, but not in antler mass. This is especially true of basal circumference.  Antler pedicles (the specialized tissue where antlers grow from the skull) increase with age. I’ve never known or heard of then decreasing.

Enjoy creation,
