How do you confirm a deer is dead before approaching?

Question
I have always heard that when we approach our recovered deer that we should poke the deer before getting too close to make sure it is dead.

Yet in the videos I watch, including your staff, I do not see that being done. Is it just not necessary or are they just not including that in their video footage?

Your thoughts?

Love your show. Keep honoring the Lord. Thank you.

Gary,

It’s certainly important to confirm any deer (or other critter) is dead before getting to close.  I simply look at the critter and watch it’s chest as I’m approaching.  It will be obvious if the critter is breathing as even shallow breaths will cause their chest to raise and fall.

Thanks for watching GrowingDeer and for sharing the encouraging words!

Enjoy creation,
