What’s the name of the grunt call you tested and use?

First of all, thank you for being a powerful witness for Jesus Christ. It seems to me that the majority of us outdoorsman also share a love for our Lord, and I am so thankful that you have a platform to show everyone about all that Christ has done for us. Your faith will give you a peace that passes understanding as you deal with the trials you are going through with your father, and your audience will bear witness to that. Stay strong. I’m praying for you brother.
So, anyway. On a show a while back you, Adam, and the interns tested grunt calls. It was clear you couldn’t or wouldn’t share which one you settled on as the best, but I was hoping you could share that info privately. The buck to doe ratios are terrible in southern Maine, and deer are never likely to respond, but I do bowhunt every October in Ohio. The deer are much more responsive there. I currently use a True Talker, and quite honestly, it doesn’t seem to sound anything like the grunts I hear the deer doing on your trail cams.
I know you are busy, and may not even see this, but thanks again for all you do, and keep it up.
By the way, I’m sending this from my treestand. It’s the last day I can hunt this season. God has blessed my family of 7 with four deer this year, and I’m trying for one last doe.
Luke,
Thank you for sharing the kind words!
We tested many of the currently available calls. We listened to them in comparison with lots of recordings we had of wild, free-ranging bucks. I wasn’t totally pleased with any of them. Either the tone, rhythm, or both were wrong. Like turkeys or humans, each deer is a unique individual and has a unique voice. However, the tone and rhythm is somewhat similar in humans and even more so in deer!
I had been very impressed with turkey calls made by Scott Hook of Hook’s Customs Calls and asked him to make me a grunt call. One of Scott’s guys, James, has won the world championship owl calling contest many times using a call he made. James is a great outdoorsmen and craftsmen. James built us a call that we included in our pre season testing. I liked James’ call but offered some suggestions. James tweaked the call based on his knowledge of woods, reeds, etc., and sent me another. Short story, after MANY versions and testing I believe James nailed the tone, rhythm, and volume that I wanted!
James built the GrowingDeer Team calls and we’ve tagged a pile of bucks using the calls this year! You may have heard the calls and seen bucks responding to them on GrowingDeer.com.
I hope Hook’s Custom Calls, http://www.hookscalls.com/, will offer the grunt call duing 2016.
Enjoy creation,
