Like myself, Brad believes in sharing his love of hunting with today’s youth. Brad made time to take Justin out on a youth hunt last weekend. Justin’s jake was 15 lbs.
An avid hunter, Brad never has trouble waking up early to get out. Yesterday his dedication paid off. Brad headed out early in the morning and waited quietly until he heard gobbles over in the distance. He was able to enjoy success with a 21 lb, 10 1/4” beard, 9/16” spurs gobbler.

This morning I headed out early to go turkey hunting with my brother-in-law, Darrell Avery. The morning started slow and quiet, the birds didn’t gobble off the roost. About an hour after sunrise we started to hear a few gobbles in the distance. Being a cut and run turkey hunter normally I would’ve headed off towards the gobbles. But having a camera in tow, we had incentive to wait it out. A hen pitched directly in front of our blind, ignored the decoy and fed all the way out of the food plot. Awhile later, after a bit more aggressive calling, a mature bird walked directly to the jake decoy – silently. I was filming away and could tell that Darrell was eager to fire. So I gave a single yelp and the gobbler stuck his head up and Darrell made the shot. After a few high fives we saw two more toms run in. This is something I’ve got to learn about blinds versus cut and run hunting – blinds can limit your peripheral vision. I could have made the shot at the 2nd adult tom, but I saved it for another episode of GrowingDeer.tv.

Turkey season opened in Missouri yesterday. I had the opportunity to go hunting with my father, Glen Woods. He is 79 years old and harvested his first gobbler! 21.6 lbs, 10” beard, 1 3/16” spurs. I went out again this morning with Brad. We saw turkeys, but there weren’t any gobblers within shooting range.

I’m getting ready for a seminar tonight at the First Baptist Church of Swedeborg. Attendees will learn the best techniques for Patterning Mature Bucks. I use Reconyx trail cameras because they provide great information with minimal disturbance.

Yesterday I took my oldest daughter, Raleigh (11), turkey hunting after church. It was really important to me that she be able to harvest her first turkey. Her patience paid off, she had a clean kill at 19 yards. Raleigh used a 20 gauge shotgun loaded with 7 ½ shot. (I like these lighter loads when taking a youth hunting so they don’t become fearful of the recoil.)

Information is crucial to every hunter and land manager. That is why I was so excited to see these Reconyx pictures. The bucks are holding their antlers late in the season. This indicates good herd health and tells me to schedule my shed hunt later next year! I also love to know where the deer are bedding down. I can’t wait until next year……

Tracy is doing great finding sheds and training the dog, Crystal, this year. Tracy has found six so far and is still looking! Maybe next year I should have her train me…..

Yesterday Brad, Bill and I did a 120 acre prescribed fire. Towards the end of the day Brad found a shed from a buck we call Barely 10. He was tired from walking up and down the hill all day, but not too tired to carry out a nice shed.
